Buy vs Lease in Abilene, TX
When you come to Kia of Abilene, you’ll have two different options for getting a vehicle from us. You can either purchase the vehicle or lease it from us. Although both choices will let you drive through Abilene in a Kia K4, Carnival, Sportage, or other model, they have significant differences. Allow our team members to show you how each works.
Understanding Buying
When you purchase a vehicle, you’ll either make a lump sum payment of its total cost or take out a loan and pay it off over time. These agreements can last anywhere from three years to seven years in duration. During the time that you’re paying off the Kia model, you drive as many miles as you like on Highway 83 and take it to any number of service centers for maintenance. You can modify the vehicle in many ways once you become the sole owner of the car, adding new wheels or changing the exterior color. Since you’re paying for the entire Kia model, the monthly payments tend to be higher than when leasing. Some of the drawbacks of this approach include that it becomes harder to upgrade to a different model without selling and purchasing another vehicle. Additionally, your car will lose value over time due to depreciation.

A lease contract is akin to a long-term rental. Oftentimes, these last anywhere from two to four years, much shorter than a purchase. When you enter this type of agreement with our Finance Department, you’ll negotiate a mileage limit. You must abide by those terms or pay a penalty per mile at the end of the contract. You’ll also be tasked with getting routine maintenance to ensure the vehicle is kept in optimal condition since it will eventually return to our stock. After all, you will bring your Kia back to us at the end of the timeline. Still, leasing lets you travel with a factory-fresh car and has lower costs on a monthly basis compared with buying. After the agreement ends, you can restart another contract in a just-released vehicle, finance the one you’ve been driving, or not renew the lease at all. This flexibility makes leasing attractive to people from many walks of life.
Deciding Which Is Best for Your Needs
You’ll want to carefully consider whether you would benefit from buying or leasing a car before signing any paperwork. Generally, the lower monthly payments and opportunity to drive recently released vehicles are two reasons why leasing is more useful for people who don’t have a long commute and want the most modern amenities. It’s also a good option for individuals whose vehicle needs could change in a short amount of time, such as if your family may grow. Buying comes with a higher monthly cost, but it provides you with a higher level of freedom to do with the Kia what you wish. If you want to mount bike racks on top and take it to Stevenson Park or out of state altogether, you can do that without a second thought. Financing a Kia model leads to ownership, so you gain a form of property rather than renting one. So, if you drive often and far and plan to keep a car for many years, buying could be right for you. Later on, during the service he came to me and said he was mistaken and gave me the price of a 4 cylinder. He could have easily charged us the larger price but chose to be honest. “ I’ve visited this service department three times now with my Sportage, and while the representatives at the service desk podiums are consistently nice and deserve five stars for their attitude, the overall experience has been disappointing. There seems to have been a restructure lately that just isn't working, as the level of service has definitely slipped since 2023. The communication is very poor compared to other Kia locations that provide updates every hour; here, I’m often left in the dark. I was also never offered a courtesy ride or told when to return for my next maintenance. Most frustratingly, a manager told me they wouldn't be responsible for any damages if they washed my car. It is original Kia matte paint, so I would expect the dealership to be the one place that knows how to handle it properly. The people at the desks are great, but the management and the current process really need to improve. ”
