Performance
The 2026 Sorento is a significantly more adaptable vehicle than the gas-powered Highlander as it comes with two different powertrain options compared to the sole engine offered in the Toyota. First up for the Sorento is its efficiency-focused 2.5L 4-cylinder engine, which is paired with a standard FWD system to earn a 23/31/26 MPG city/hwy/combined estimated fuel rating1. Toyota’s SUV tops out at 21/28/24 MPG city/hwy/combined2, using a turbocharged 2.4L 4-cylinder standard engine as well as standard AWD. Its default power output is higher than the Kia model’s, tallying at 265 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. Where the Sorento leaps ahead even further is with available options, including a 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder variant and an AWD system. In this arrangement, it rumbles with 281 horsepower and 311 lb.-ft. of torque when you step on the gas while going down Route 277.
Interior

The 2026 Kia Sorento takes the lead with features such as its available 14-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with 4-way lumbar support, while Toyota’s highest trim offers only 10-way power-adjustment. Backseat passengers will be grateful to ride in the Kia too, since it offers 41.7/29.6 in. of second and third row legroom compared to the Highlander’s totals of 38.7/28.0 in. Another highlight of the Sorento is the unique dual-level cargo floor, which you lift to stash valuables out of plain view while visiting Oscar Rose Park. This feature isn’t available in the Highlander, though both models offer genuine leather upholstery as an option.
Technology
The tech-centric Kia Sorento moves ahead of the Highlander with advantages such as up to six USB charging ports compared to the Toyota’s maximum of four3. It also offers a vast 24-in. dual panoramic display4, which merges the instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen under one pane of glass. This attractive arrangement is not available in the Highlander, but it does offer the same standard wireless Android Auto™5/6 and Apple CarPlay compatibility®7/8 found in the Kia. Music can sound more impressive in the Sorento, as it boasts an available 12-speaker Bose® Premium Audio System9. The Highlander’s optional JBL®10 setup provides only 11 speakers.
